The mass media has an affinity for crime and crime-related activities. This can be easily be seen as crime stories account for a major portion of written and broadcast media. In addition, most research has focused on the ability of the mass media to create deviant behavior and crime. However, this media coverage distorts the actual crime picture by focusing on selected types of crime and overemphasizing the level of crime. This has the potential to raise fear among media consumers. But, the media may also play a role in the prevention of crime.
